Paul and Anna

This is a portrait of my cousin Paul and his wonderful wife Anna. When we visited them earlier this year for the very first time, their warmth and hospitality was limitless, and we definitely were made to feel part of their family. We couldn't have felt more welcomed. The setting here is their favorite restaurant where we ate outside on a shaded patio on a beautiful sunny afternoon. We will never forget that day, and by painting the moment, it is forever in my mind, and after I mail it to them, hopefully theirs as well. We hope to visit them again soon, in Augsburg, Germany.

  1. Oh Vern, what a wonderful gift to have a portrait done by one of my favorite artists! Your cousins no doubt will be on the moon with delight and in awe of your talent. How sweet of you.

  2. Beautiful use of muted complimentary colors, did they happen to be dressed that way...happy accident... or did you use your artist license to change their clothing? There are so many things that I admire in this painting, one of my favorites is the contrast of the direction of the brushstrokes in your cousin's shirt. Very well done!

  5. This is wonderful, Vern. I can sense their personalities. How cool for them to have this to keep and later to be remembered always in such a special way.

I love the loose brushwork and the visible plane changes. I'd rather see this style anyday than "smooth" portraits.
