Stacked Rocks

This is my last landscape from Helper, and not really being into them prior to the workshop, I feel that I want to pursue painting the world now that the plein air bug has bitten me. Figures are still my passion, but broadening ones horizons is always a worthwhile pursuit. This piece was finished fairly quickly in my studio. When the darks and values are laid in accurately, adding colour and highlights not only make more sense, but they go down so much easier with more strength and conviction. Using this technique I hope and feel that improvement will come with each successive painting.

  2. Plein air painting is most challenging and thrilling all at the same time, and it is obvious you enjoy it very much. Of all subjects, rocks are the hardest, really love these last two paintings, rocks are your thing! Here in North Texas, my painting buddies and I are in plein air withdrawal, just too hot to paint outside. So with that in mind, I look forward to more of your plein air painting adventure!

  7. Yes, this looks good - rocks are tough subjects but I like what you did and I like the shifts in colors in the foreground.

  8. sounds as though you had an inspired wonderful time in Helper. I have been through there a few times and even stayed in Price nearby. Love the country around there. The San Raphael has millions of paintings begging to be painted. Looks as though you are hooked on Plein Airs. So looking forward to your upocoming productions.

  9. You have made the grand jump - it seems - into the world of landscape. Your colors are so inviting and you make the scenery look incredible! Nice work - well worth the trip to Utah and the learning with a great master!

  10. Wonderful, Vern! You are the rock guy now. So glad you love plein air. Even if I need a photo to help remind me of the original weather, I prefer to paint outside, even if it takes two sessions. There is just something about being outside...

  12. Really enjoyed your workshop posts, Vern. Excellent paintings and your humor is the icing! I'm usually overwhelmed by landscape, so am really impressed you've got the plein air 'bug' as you say.
I have a question - Does Doug B. use a medium or just mineral spirits?
