Buddha

Every week there seems to be a new artistic challenge for most of us, in that we may not have previously tackled a particular subject or may have opted to try a different approach in how we interpret it. In the end, it can be a fabulous learning experience for some, a way to showcase art, or a great opportunity to make a few new friends. This week was a challenge for me as most weeks are, and I came away with a result that makes me want to try it again. Never having really paid attention to what a hydrangea looks like, I struggled with this. Karin says, "Don't do what you know you can, do what you think you can not. It motivates you." Sage words that work for me. The next attempts I am sure will show some improvement. This is the real beauty of the weekly challenges. They make you paint and hopefully stretch your abilities. Whoa, this is starting to sound like I've been locked in the basement for just a little too long. So I will finish off by saying...

8"x8"

oil on masonite.

  1. Vern, I love it, don't do it again... unless you really have too. The colors and impressionist brushstrokes are splendid. This piece sings- I mean that.

  2. Thanks Alice, Rose liked it too and promptly commandeered it for her office. I didn't paint with confidence though, and feel it lacks the freshness of knowing your subject and laying down meaningful strokes the first time. Your pieces are always so clean and precise, so you know what I mean.

  3. I agree with Alice, Vern. I think it looks great. I like your use of color, and your hydrangeas look like hydrangeas. Nicely done.

  4. Vern, I third what Alice and Kari said, your version is WONderful. I'm with you, I don't really know what hydrangeas are supposed to look like but yours are my favorite of ALL the paintings so far, and your colors and brushstrokes are AWEsome. If you didn't paint with confidence maybe that's how you should always do it, because the result is WOW. So, stay in the basement and keep painting, it's inspiring me. I still haven't started mine on this! (we'll see...)

  5. Hey Camille good to see you back and thanks a bunch. Have you figured out the posting thing yet? I popped by your spot a couple of times( but I suppose you already know that, lol) and hadn't noticed any changes. I'll try again now. Seeya

  7. Vern, you don't need to paint with confidence you just need to paint. because you already have all the knowledge in your head , now just keep painting. Maybe not knowing your subject very well is a good thing for you because it's fresh and sings like Alice wrote. We all agree your talent is wonderful and has a quality of it's own , we just want to see more of it ! Bravo.

  8. Thanks Dominique, Now it's starting to look like I've been fishing for compliments. lol I'm trying to be more productive though. Robert Genn has outlined disciplines to follow in the pursuit of artistic growth, and I have yet to embrace the great suggestions he puts forth. Baby steps!

  9. Vern, I finally got my KJ painting done, can you believe it?! But of course I have yet to work on the blog arrangement you suggested, but I will! Soon! Our girls just went back to college... baby steps. Whew, good to have that painting done though. :D Oh boy, I wonder what Karin has in store next! She is full of surprises.

  10. Vern, you are a genius and I owe you BIGTIME!! I'm in the process of doing what you said to fix my blog problem. THANK YOU!!! It's so easy, I can't believe I just now know what to do, lol. THANKS. Camille (PS of course it will take a couple days to get all the pictures reloaded in the right places, but... I know what to do now, hooray!)

  11. Glad it worked out for you Camille, but saying that it was so easy kind of diminishes the genius part. lol

It is all pretty simple though isn't it, except for the linking part which Alice cleared up for me and I'm sure a few others. Blog on!!
